Virus threatens industry hopes for recovery

July 13, 2009 -- Latest forecasts from PATA for international arrivals to Thailand and the Asia Pacific region contain some very modest grounds for optimism – but the spread of the Type A (H1N1) influenza virus is posing yet another serious threat to the travel and tourism industry.

Updates produced today (Monday July 13th) from PATA’s Strategic Intelligence Centre indicate that Southeast Asia will this year suffer a fall of around four percent in international arrivals compared to 2008. PATA has also revised forecasts for all Asia sub-regions for 2010. The initial prediction of a growth of some 12.7 percent in international arrivals for Southeast Asia has been downgraded to 6.8 percent (compared to 2008).

But there is every chance that the continuing spread of the Type A (H1N1) influenza virus will further undermine the confidence of business and leisure travellers and prompt drastic preventative measures by national governments and other public and private sector organisations that will also hinder cross-border traffic.

PATA remains in close contact with its members, industry stakeholders and authoritative bodies such as the World Health Organization and the UNWTO on this vital issue.

"It is clear that we must now apply the knowledge, expertise and lessons learned from the SARS crisis of 2003 and recent outbreaks of the Avian Influenza A/(H5N1). PATA is ready to work closely with its members and the wider travel and tourism community to ensure that the industry is ready to deal with this latest challenge," says Association CEO Greg Duffell.

Holiday Villa to Open 2 Properties in Asia by end 2009

Holiday Villa Hotels and Resorts (Holiday Villa), part of the listed Advance Synergy in Malaysia, has announced plans to open two properties in Cambodia and China by end of 2009. The two hotels, located in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, and Kaifeng in Henan Province, China, will bring the total room count operated by Holiday Villa to approximately 4,400 keys. In 2009, Holiday Villa has already opened properties in Halong Bay, Vietnam, and Shenzhen, China. Currently, the group operates 16 hotels and resorts across eight countries.

The authorities hope that more hotels would be built to support tourism development in the state. Harp Soon Builds Resort In Malacca, Malaysia

Harp Soon Construction Berhad has announced its plans to develop an 8.72-acre integrated resort, Bayou Lagoon Park Resort, in Malacca, Malaysia. The resort development is expected to comprise four blocks of serviced apartments, a hotel, a retail centre, a convention hall, a clubhouse and an approximately US$2.28 million water park. The serviced apartments development is expected to have a gross development value of US$71.1 million, and two blocks are scheduled to be completed by early 2012. As a developer with 30 years of experience in residential and commercial projects in the Klang Valley, the mixed-use development is the company's first venture into resort development.

Rise in ASEAN Tourists for Malaysia 2008

Malaysia welcomed a total of 16.6 million international arrivals from the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2008, reflecting an increase of 6.5% from 2007. These arrivals made up approximately 75% of the total international arrivals for Malaysia in 2008 and contributed around US$9.4 billion to the economy, recording a 10% increase from 2007. Malaysian tourism authorities have identified the region as a vital source of demand, given its total population of 570 million and the preference for short-haul travelling amidst the current economic conditions.

Malaysia will welcome its first Hard Rock Hotel, the US$43 million 249-key Hard Rock Hotel Penang, in Batu Ferringgi, Penang by September 2009. In addition, Hard Rock International (Hard Rock) is still looking at opportunities in Kuala Lumpur even though prior deals for two to three properties did not work out. Hard Rock also mentioned that they are interested in Vietnam, Shanghai and Beijing and will be keen on the Thai and Japanese markets gaming be legalised.

Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre), strategically located in the heart of the capital city, has clinched 17 more conferences for the city in the first four months of 2009. The five international conferences between 2009 and 2014 are expected to attract 5,700 delegates and the seven regional conferences, 3,000 delegates between this year (2009) and 2011. The five national conferences, all in 2009, will see participation from 2,250 delegates. Mr Peter Brokenshire, General Manager of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre said, "The successful bids are a reflection of international and regional associations and meeting planners' confidence in Malaysia as an attractive destination for business tourism, the country's strong track record and more importantly, they are testimony to Malaysia's excellent value for money proposition. The World Economic Forum ranked Malaysia as the 4th most price competitive country in the world for travel and tourism in 2009, offering excellent price competitiveness with its low comparative hotel and fuel prices, low ticket taxes and airport charges plus a favourable tax regime. Kuala Lumpur was also rated the most price competitive city by Swiss banking giant, UBS in 2008 and the country scored for having the cheapest Big Mac among 34 countries surveyed according to the latest Big Mac index published by The Economist in February 2009.

Actors, actresses, managers and line staff alike have all received similar training on delivering that memorable and flawless experience with a smile!

One thing is for sure. There are many stars in the hospitality industry! It takes a special type of talented individual to withstand the many exciting and challenging situations and roles that arise during their stage debut!
